Mount Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi River and stands at a respectable 6,684 ft above sea level. This elevation puts Mt. Mitchell's isolation is an impressive 1,188.99 miles. Originally named Black Dome by early European-American settlers, it was renamed after Elisha Mitchell, a UNC professor who was determined the mountain was higher than Mount Washington and spent years making his case. The endeavor ultimately cost him his life; he fell to death at Mitchell Falls in 1857. He is buried at the summit of Mount Mitchell.
