The New Hampshire 48 4000-footers is a list of mountains located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. To qualify for this list, each peak needs to have a prominence of at least 200 ft. This means there are actually many mountains in the Whites that are over 4,000 ft but are not represented on this list due to the requirements. Mount Hight is an example of a mountain not qualifying; it reaches 4,675 ft (higher than more than half those on the list below), but its prominence is just 125 due to the proximately to Carter Dome.

New Hampshire Peak Bagging

The prospect of hiking the New Hampshire 48 4000-footers is exciting and elevates a hiker’s status in the community. The challenge beyond hiking 48 mountains is that if you don’t live in a town within the White Mountains or close by, getting to the mountains often enough to bag them can be time-consuming. Because of this, many hikers will plan multi-peak hikes that take shape as loops, traverses, or overnight backpacking.
